The Art Kit?

#howtoart #theartkit #shouldigetanartkit

Are you looking for a gift for a young artist and was thinking about getting an art kit? I can give you some suggestions that won't destroy your bank account, and that will make the little one happy.

To be frank, these art kits aren't "bad" but they are bad when it comes to the quality. I actually liked getting these when I was a kid, and that's what they are for. Little children that just want to make stuff. There is so much to use and so many colors. For a bit better quality you can also go to your dollar store and put together a pack of crayons, color pencils, and paint in a binder with cheap or card stock paper. (Just an idea)

Taking The Extra Step

For children that are older I do suggest getting better materials. Just ask them what they want and they will tell you, but if it's really expensive see about finding an alternative.

Note: Student Grade is Academic Grade and Artist Grade is known as Professional Grade. Student grade are materials for beginner artists and tend to be on the cheaper side. Artist grade are for professional artists and can cost a lot of money, but these supplies are the highest of quality.

Alternatives

Pencil/Graphite

If they like to use pencil/graphite these sets would be perfect for them. Some of the sets come with hard and soft pencils along with an eraser, pencil sharpener, and blending sticks.

Colored pencils

Color pencils focus on wax, pigment, and blend-ability. The most popular brand of colored pencils are Prismacolor. I've used crayola and Prismacolor, however this medium is very hard on your wrists.

Alcohol Markers

Alcohol Markers are able to blend, not smear as much and have vibrant colors. Copics are the most popular markers on the market, but they are the most expensive. I wouldn't suggest these for upcoming artist due to the price, but I do suggest these Ohuhu markers. Even though these don't have a brush like nib these are still good to start with.

Ink

If your child likes to do a lot of ink work, I suggest getting pens, Indian ink, a liner brush, and a dip pen. I personally use speed ball and Blick brand ink. Fine liners are also good.

Watercolors

These are considered the cheapest paints to have and they're friendly when it comes to clean up. There are other brands but don't worry about them because watercolors can get super expensive. Reeves are very good for starters along with PRANG Oval-8 Pan Watercolor Paint Set. Paint brushes are also needed so cheap soft brush or a water brush would be great.

Acrylic Paint

Acrylics are the easiest paints to use due to how easy it is to cover mistakes and how fast they dry. These paints focus on opaqueness, thickness and dry time. These Apple Barrels are craft paints so they will be on the more loss side.

Sketchbooks

For sketchbooks the most popular one would be the Canson Mix Media Sketch Book and for good reason. This sketchbook is used for all wet and dry media. Another sketchbook I suggest is Strathmore Toned Paper, but this one is better for dry media. Also this book is easy on the eyes and highlights can be used.

Strathmore 412-9 400 Series Toned Tan Sketch Pad, 9"x12" Wire Bound, 50 Sheets: https://amzn.to/3frv6LS

Again, don't get the most expensive stuff but get things that are good quality not artist quality.

Hope ya'll have a great day.

Please and thank you! ♥ ♥
